Brindaban Govt. College

A Legacy Built Over Time

Tracing our roots and the foundation of excellence.

Brindaban Government College, located in the heart of Habiganj district, is one of Bangladesh’s most historic and esteemed institutions of higher education. Established in 1931 as Habiganj College, it was later renamed in honor of philanthropist Brindaban Chandra Das, whose generous donation enabled its formal recognition and development. In 1979, the college was nationalized and has since been known as Brindaban Government College. The institution rests on 6.10 acres of lush, walled campus space and has long served as a cornerstone of academic excellence in the Sylhet region. From its modest beginnings, it has evolved into a multidisciplinary center offering HSC, undergraduate, and postgraduate education, committed to fostering intellectual growth, civic responsibility, and a progressive learning environment for students across generations.

Introduction

The establishment of Habiganj College in 1931 was a direct result of the outstanding performance of local students in matriculation under Calcutta University. Despite financial challenges, local leaders set up a bamboo-structured college at Manoharganj Bazar, beginning with 30–35 students in the humanities stream. Early classes were taught by volunteer MA graduates and local lawyers. A major breakthrough came when Professor Bipin Bihari Dey from Ripon College, Kolkata, agreed to serve as principal at a modest salary of 25 taka. To meet affiliation requirements, the college needed a permanent endowment and provincial approval. Philanthropist Brindaban Chandra Das generously donated 10,000 taka, leading to the renaming of the college. Eventually, it secured Bengal Government recognition and affiliation with Calcutta University, becoming Assam Province’s fourth college.

Early Beginnings

Following its affiliation in 1933, Brindaban College quickly gained academic reputation. Its first Intermediate batch passed with distinction, leading to exam center designation in 1934. Honors courses in English, Political Economy, and Political Philosophy were introduced in 1940–41. After Partition, the college came under Dhaka University and gradually expanded its academic offerings: Intermediate Commerce (1949–50), B.Com Pass (1953–54), Intermediate Science (1960–61), and B.Sc. Pass (1969–70). Honors courses were reinstated in 1998–99, with Master’s programs beginning in 2010–11. Today, the college offers HSC, BA, BSS, BBA, BSc, Honors, and Master’s degrees in 14 subjects. With state-of-the-art facilities and a strong academic tradition, Brindaban Government College continues to shape future leaders, upholding its legacy as a center for excellence in education and community advancement.
